Leonardo e il divin felino

Leonardo da Vinci passionately conveys his love for animals, especially cats, in this quotation taken from his manuscripts. In the 1470s he drew a series of studies on the theme of the ‘Madonna and Child’ with a cat. The sketches are based on the legend that a cat was born at the same time as the Christ Child. Leonardo believed in the divinity of all animals, however small or defenceless. He purchased caged birds in the market and set them free. His earliest surviving drawing is a bird´s eye view of the river Arno from Montalbano near Vinci. Our feline friends, like Leonardo, also love birds and, oddly, don’t seem to possess the tendency to kill.
